Jewellery Care
Due to its composition, sterling silver can tarnish over time.
Tarnishing is the result of a chemical reaction with oxygen or sulphur particles in the air. But don’t worry, there are many ways in which you can take care of your sterling silver jewellery and keep it shining.
How to Prevent Tarnishing
- Wear your jewellery as much as possible! Your skin's natural oils help to keep silver jewellery shiny. Leaving it to sit in a box will encourage it to tarnish.
- If you are doing household chores, we recommend that you remove your jewellery as substances with additional sulphur like cleaning products, will accelerate corrosion and tarnish.
- Try to avoid keeping your jewellery in direct sunlight for long periods of time as this can cause tarnishing.
- Lotions, makeup, hair spray and perfumes can accelerate tarnishing, so if you’re getting yourself ready, put your jewellery on last!
Cleaning your jewellery
- We recommend using soap and water with a soft tooth brush as this is the most delicate way to clean your jewellery. We would always recommend doing this first before trying anything else.
- If soap and water doesn’t work, you can use baking soda and water. Make a paste using baking soda and water, apply a small amount to a toothbrush and scrub gently.
- If you have heavy tarnish on your jewellery you can try using white vinegar and baking soda. Soak your silver in 120ml of white vinegar & 2 tbsp of baking soda for 2-3 hours. Rinse the jewellery and then pat dry.
- After you have cleaned your jewellery, you can finish off by using the polishing cloth included in your order to bring back its beautiful shine.
Storing your jewellery
If you aren’t wearing your jewellery, we recommend keeping it in a cool, dark place in an air-tight container.
